III. Typing in Russian

Windows XP has an exellent support for russian language. It is very similar to Windows 2000 cyrillic support

You might need:

Please follow these instructions:

  1. First of all you have to russify Windows XP. Please follow this tutorial.

  2. Now you can switch keyboard by pushing LeftAlt+Shift or by clicking EN/RU mini-icon on a Task Bar and selecting the appropriate language.

  3. You installed JTsUKENG keyboard layout -- the one that is used on Russian typewriters. Many people, including me, like Phonetic or YaWERTY keyboard layout in which cyrillic 'A' sits on the same key as latin 'A', cyrillic '.' sits on the same key as latin '.', and so on. To do this:
    a) Download file KBDRUNPH.DLL into c:\windows\system32 directory
    b) Download file KBDRUNPH.REG to any locations you want and execute it (double click or open). You will get prompted: "Are you sure you want to add the information in KBDRUNPH.REG to the registry?"
    Click "YES".

  4. Log Off and the Log On. Your new phonetic layout should be working now !

!!! ATTENTION if you experience any problem DOWNLOAD and apply this file (KBDRU.REG) to revert to the original WINDOWS keyboard layout !!!
